The Presence of Scientific Theory

Select a theoretical relationship and retain the conditions that give it meaning.

A scientific theory describes relationships under particular conditions. Relativity connects measurements in different frames; thermodynamics describes the direction of processes. Writing from a theory begins by selecting the relationship that matters to this poem.

In “Early Morning at Tims,” a spoon turns backward but the milk’s white thread does not return. Irreversibility becomes felt through coffee, a hand, and a morning. The scene gives the relationship a sensory and emotional setting.

Terms, equations, information, and metaphor can all carry theory. They earn their place by sharpening an image or changing the development of thought. The selected relationship stays intelligible while language gives it associations beyond explanation.
